Sweet Dreams
A Dublin dream interpreter believes our dreams can tell us more about ourselves than we think
.
Report by Siobhan Maguire
DUBLINERS are embracing the idea of dream analysis and interpretation, says founder of the Aisling Dream Interpretation, Michael Sheridan. The Rathfarnham man has been co-running the Complementary Therapy Centre, Complementary House in Terenure for over a decade and has witnessed a sharp rise in Dublin interest in the field of dreams.

A fascinating subject, Michael believes we can tell so much from our dreams which can be indicative of future health concerns, life-changing aspects or career moves.

He admits to being a skeptic prior to studying dream analysis. However, he had always harboured an interest in all things spiritual and when his sister suggested they attend the dream analysis classes, he agreed.

The former IT buff is now dedicated to his profession and has no regrets about leaving a sensible career in computers behind for the unpredictable and exciting world of dream interpretation.

“Aisling is an Irish word meaning dream or vision,” Michael says in reference to the name of his company. “My mission is to teach people how to breathe life into their dreams and realise how much you can learn from them.”

A clear and concise website carries all the relevant information one needs to learn about dream interpretation. The site offers an array of services including newsletters, a dream dictionary, one-to-one readings and information on courses and workshops organised and taught by Michael.

Since going on-line in December 1996, the site now receives in excess of 200,000 hits a week.

“Dreams can tell us almost anything about ourselves,” he says. “One thing many people are not aware of is the fact that our dreams can tell us about our health and what our bodies are feeling. If you are developing a health problem your dreams will be telling you this well in advance.”

“For example, if the dream draws attention to a physical structure or device, the subject matter is an aspect of physical functioning – a dream showing a fridge in bad repair indicates that the dreamer’s stomach is in need of healing.”

The location of dreams is also extremely important as it indicates three things: the subject matter of the dream; the dreamer’s state of mind; and the cause.

“There are different meanings for different symbols within our dreams,” Michael adds. “Of course, if a particular symbol is of a certain association to the dreamer its interpretation can mean something different.”

Michael says that common dreams include symbols such as a school or an exam. This simply means that you are learning about yourself with a view to improving yourself.

Dreaming about teeth or loss of teeth can mean two things. Firstly it can indicate an aggression or assertiveness within the dreamer or the loss of teeth can relate to the reproductive system.

Other factors which can tell a lot about the dreamer relates to dreaming in colour or dreaming in black and white.

“Colours in your dreams are a form of healing or guidance,” he says. “The negative shades and negative combinations of colours are a reflection of your fears and reservations about such healing and guidance.”

Nightmares are not necessarily a bad thing either and can simply be telling you an awful lot about your state of mind, body and health.

“I know that some people might be sceptical of dream analysis and might doubt that we can derive so much information about a person from their dreams,” he states. “But the truth is that we can tell a lot about many different aspects in any one dream.”

The myth that we have one dream a night is untrue, according to Michael, who says we have numerous dreams in any one night. Also, people who state they don’t dream are incorrect as everyone dreams.

Anyone interested in dream interpretation should check out the Aisling website as it carries a host of background information into the interpretations and symbolism of dreams.

“I would urge anyone who is curious about dreams or has always wanted to know what their dreams mean to check out the website, there is no charge to browse the site and one-to-one readings can be offered in person, over the internet and over the phone,” he says. “While the one-to-one readings cost a fee, the website is non-affiliated and free from commercial sponsorships. It is there to be enjoyed by people and if I can encourage people to realise the pool of information available from within your dreams then I have done my job.”
